How to Choose Gymnastic Rings: 1.1″ vs 1.25″, Straps and Sets
Short answer: choose the 1.1 in (2.8 cm) ring if you train gymnastic skills such as muscle-ups, levers and planches, use a false grip, or have small hands. Choose the 1.25 in (3.2 cm) ring if your hands are medium to large, or you mainly train strength moves such as dips, rows and push-ups and want your grip to work harder on every rep.
Then pick the set by what you hang the rings from: a bar or beam, a high beam, or a door.
1.1 in vs 1.25 in at a glance
| 1.1 in (2.8 cm) | 1.25 in (3.2 cm) | |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | Gymnastics competition diameter | The size most CrossFit and commercial gyms hang |
| Grip | Easier to close your hand around and to hold a false grip | Thicker, so your forearms and fingers work harder |
| Best for | Muscle-ups, levers, planches, skill work | Dips, rows, push-ups, general strength |
| Hand size | Small to medium | Medium to large |
Quick check: the 1.1 in ring is close to the grip of an Olympic barbell. The 1.25 in ring is close to a typical pull-up bar. If a pull-up bar already feels thick in your hand, take the 1.1 in.
Still between sizes? Let your goal decide. Training for the muscle-up: 1.1 in. Training for grip strength: 1.25 in.
All our rings are wood. Wood absorbs some of the sweat on your hands, so the grip stays less slippery through a session and you use less chalk. Every strap we sell has embroidered numbered slots and a carabiner, so both rings hang level without measuring.

Who each one is for
A first set for a bar or beam. Take the Gymnastic Rings And Straps 1.1″ if you want the thinner grip, or the Gymnastic Rings And Straps 1.25″ for the thicker one. Both come with 9.2 ft straps, 1.5 in wide, rated 1,100 lb (500 kg) per ring and strap.
A high ceiling beam. The Gymnastic Rings And Straps Extension set adds a 3.6 ft extension strap to each main strap. The working length goes from 8.6 ft to 12.2 ft (372 cm). Unclip the extensions when you train from a lower bar.
No bar at home. The set with a door anchor and leg straps hangs from a door that locks. Nothing is screwed into the door. The 2 foot straps are for lower body and core work from a plank position, such as mountain climbers.
You already own straps. The 1.1″ and 1.25″ rings-only pairs replace worn rings. The 1.25 in pair is rated 800 lb per ring.
Your straps wore out. Competition Straps For Gymnastic Rings have the same numbered slots and carabiners as our ring sets, sold on their own. The carabiners lock with a security screw and an Allen key.
How to set them up
- Loop each strap over your bar, beam or branch.
- Clip each carabiner into the same numbered slot on both straps, so the rings hang level.
- To change height, move both carabiners to another number. There is no buckle to pull or tension.
Every set includes a travel case, a gift box, online exercise videos and an eBook. The rings-only pairs include the videos and eBook.
